In recent weeks, the Snowy Owl invasion has excited some of us birders in the lower 48. And then some became even more excited at the news that Snowy Owls are being shot at JFK. One report read "Snowy Owls are in the Crosshairs."
The USDA's Animal Plant Health Inspection Service data reveals that U.S. tax dollars were hard at work killing 1,586,932 animals native to North American in fiscal year 2012. (A total of 3,352,378 total went down). 9 Snowy Owls were recorded "taken." For the sake of comparison, here is what Snowy Owl extermination looks like in comparison to, say, the Common Raven's killed in FY 2012.
